 I bought and used this Randall in the mid 1980’s and used it for deer and elk hunting. It’s been sharpened and carried in the field so it’s a user. The blade is in very good condition with a couple of faint blood stains which would come out with Flitz or the equivalent. The original Randall stone is included. I liked this blade very much but decided it was a bit too nice for what I was using it for and so it’s sat in its wrapper for the past 20 years. I’ll ship it via USPS priority mail.

This knife features a 6” carbon steel blade, Nickel hilt, Wrist Thong and Exceptional piece of Finger grooved Sambar that is very uniform  and a nice blend of just enough graining and nice white polished stag.  This is one of Randall’s most popular all around heavy –duty sportsman’s knife designed for almost every outdoor use and an outstanding hunting / skinning knife. Comes with standard A type sheath. NOTE: Nice uniform Stag is becoming extremely hard to find and when or if you place an order with Randall you never know what your stag is going to look like. Here is a change to eliminate all the guess work, potential disappointment and wait time. The cloudiness on the blade is the protective coating place there by Randall, some remove this from the blade but I elect to leave the coating on the blade. It just doesn’t get much better.  Here is a Vet named Vietnam era Randall 4 – 6 with the original FPO San Francisco mailing box from Randall to the buyer.  I’m not an expert, but this looks to be a top-shelf Randall with nickel-silver hilt and butt cap over Brazilian rosewood handles that are near perfect with no cracks or chips.  I’ve inspected this little guy several times and the worse I can see are some very light scuffs or lines in the nickel silver that could probably be removed with ease.  The original black sheath is as new except for some green corrosion on the inside of the snaps, and a couple of small lines and indentions.  The white SP-13 Soft Arkansas Pocket Stone is unused, squared edges and not chips.  The Vet’s name is engraved on the reverse side of the blade and matches the name on the box and the envelope.  Unfortunately, the envelope is missing the invoice, but there is a list of ordered attributes on the back of the evelope and a grand total for this knife of $45.50.  I believe this knife was stored outside its sheath.

This is without doubt one of the sweetest pieces of American military history of a personal type I a have seen and it will make an outstanding centerpiece for any collection.

This is the third book in a collector’s series on Randall Made Knives, by Robert Hunt. These publications reflect the author’s interest in the historical role that knives have played and he has documented their use during the wars of the 20th Century. The theme of this work is the identification with the continuous design innovation of Randall knives, cataloged here in part by the appearance of images that often reflect the step by step enhancement of prototypical experimental knives.

This volume introduces the rare, unique and experimental knives of W.D. Randall, many either made or designed by him. The initial section explores knives from the Randall Museum, where over 50 images reflect the commitment to design innovation, which was and is still today, a hallmark of Randall Made Knives. Although not commonly seen, even though displayed in open cases at the Randall Museum in Orlando, this publication presents many of those unique types in a singular setting out of the case, where they can be viewed and appreciated for their various styles and relevant significance.

The second section contains knives from a private collection, which was uncovered by the author. The preservation of this collection, and in its original state, shows the care and interest taken in their ownership over the intervening 40 years. The period of their design and production, the mid-1960s, was a time of experimentation with survival types, full-tang designs and more, which are both reflected and represented in this volume. Interestingly enough, the knives in this grouping have roots in some of the “museum” examples and various designs can be found in Randall early “experiments” displayed in the museum cases.

Following these examples are an assortment of other rare and unusual knives, collected, compiled and exhibited in interesting arrangements, representing those knives that can’t lay claim to The Museum or notable private collections but reside in the knife drawers of Randall collectors of varied interests and persuasions, while carrying many of the unique design features of the former depictions.

Author Bob Hunt’s first book, Randall Fighting Knives in Wartime, provided him the opportunity for further study on this subject. It was apparent before publication of the first book, that the subject matter could not be exhausted. In his second book, Hunt continues the process of identifying, describing and dating fighting knives produced in the dramatic early days of the Randall experience. This new volume provides a vast amount of material, carefully organized and presented to enable the reader to further his own research in the areas most interesting to him.

SECTION 1…The model 1 fighter has been around for 60 years and the design and makers name are well recognized. Section 1 includes photos of a number of rare all-purpose fighting knives.

SECTION 2…The oldest style of personal protection knife influencing Western civilization has bee the double-edged type…a stabbing knife. This section features some of these knives and the “standardized” design adopted by Randall; periodically modified in order to satisfy the requirements of the time.

SECTION 3…Recognition is given in this section to several models developed during the span of years when troops were sent to Southeast Asia, as these knives are inseperable from this conflict.

SECTION 4…The heart of this book is the section on “carried knives” which features Randalls thaat have at least one of the several distinguishing requirements qualifying it to be considered a military model used in wartime. This section includes more than twenty-five examples, most never-before-photographed, that will introduce (to many for the first time) the attraction of the “used” knife.

SECTION 5…The Bowie knife was all but forgotten when the movie industry revived interest with the Iron Mistress. Recognizing that some of these models were carried in combat, we approach this section with that view in mind and represent the several distinct types that Randall created with a historical theme.

SECTION 6…Visual comparisons serve in aiding us to learn more about the subtleties in the development stages and evolution of the knives that we collect. In this section, parings appear without their sheaths, providing greater image of the knives depicted. This presentation allows the reader an opportunity to observe and compare knives on their own, in various pairs, sets and groups of like models photographed within.

SECTION 7…Not perceived in every case, but in the eyes of some, the sheath makes the knife. Ask any collector; without the one, the other will be reduced in value. Therefore, we have included a section on sheaths that should be instructive and serve to better illustrate the points of reference made in the general text of the book.

Auction is for a Randall model 18  with a 5-1/2” non stainless blade. The butt cap is knurled brass and has no compass. The handle has a satin finish with a oval brass guard. The blade is like new and hasn’t been sharpened. Has a Johnson smoothback sheath with fairly tight stitching and a orange non marked sharpening stone.  The leg chord is yellow/gold and may or may not be original to the sheath. Knife was probably made in the late 1980’s.
