How They Work

First, you’ll need to know a bit about how a spring assisted knife works. Basically these knives are special knives that have a mechanism on the inside that helps to open up the blade from the closed position. This requires that you apply some pressure to the flipper or the thumbstud that is on the knife. While you have the knife closed, there are torsion bars that keep it in place. Then you simply apply some pressure manually to open up the spring assisted knife. The torsion bar or other mechanism then moves on a track, rotating the blade so that it opens.

Not a Switchblade

When it comes to a spring assisted knife, there is quite a bit of confusion because many people think that these are switchblade knives, which are illegal in some places. There is a difference between these two knives. A switchblade knife simply opens when you push a button. However, with the spring assisted knife options, you have to actually use some pressure in order for the blade to open, which means there is a difference.

Since force of gravity or pushing a button doesn’t open up the blade for you with a spring assisted knife, they are not considered to be a switchblade type of knife. However, after you get the knife open to about a quarter of the way, then the mechanism in the knife is what opens it up the rest of the way to the open position.

Other Names

A spring assisted knife is often known by other names as well. A few of the other names that you may see them sold under include Torsion Assist Knife, Outburst, Assisted Knife, Semi-Auto, SpeedSafe, Quick Draw, Quick Release, Blade Launcher, and Alternative Automatic. Knowing these other names is important when you decide to shop for one of these blades, since you may be able to search for them under all of these names.

The combination Razor-Sharp edge with Veff Serrations is superior for fast cutting of cord, netting and vegetation.

The Ignitor T features premium blade steel, layered G10 scales, and other features including assisted opening and a unique knife safety.

First the blade. It’s a modified drop point design with a high hollow grind. They use premium 8Cr14MoV stainless steel.

The true breakthrough is the combination of the CRKT OutBurst assisted opening with the Fire Safe mechanism. When closed, the blade is safely locked by the Fire Safe pin. It cannot be opened until the safety button on the end of the thumb stud is firmly depressed and the thumb stud is nudged outward. Then the blade springs open instantly for use.
